PROJECT OVERVIEW

Reinforced Earth Soil Wall in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh

The project aimed to stabilize the road leading to the Kanaka Durga Temple, located on Indrakiladri Hill in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Due to increased traffic, the narrow, 3-meter-wide road built in 1969 was inadequate to handle the volume of vehicles. The solution involved constructing a 22-meter-high Reinforced Earth Soil Wall with PE Reinforcement Carpet to widen the road while ensuring long-term stability

The Problem

The project delivered outstanding results by providing a stable and durable solution for the road widening. The two-tier reinforced wall ensured long-term stability and resilience against heavy traffic loads. By using PE Reinforcement Carpet and locally sourced materials, the solution was cost-effective compared to alternatives like bridges or extensive excavation. Additionally, the integrated drainage system prevented waterlogging and enhanced structural integrity, making the road safe and reliable for millions of visitors to the Kanaka Durga Temple

The Solution

To address the challenges of road widening on steep terrain, a two-tier segmental retaining wall was constructed using PE Reinforcement Carpet. The bottom tier, 10 meters high, was designed to support the upper tier, 12 meters high, with an offset of 5 meters. High-strength geotextile reinforcement, integrated into a composite geotextile system, provided tensile strength (50 kN/m to 200 kN/m) and drainage capabilities. Locally available murum soil with a friction angle of 32 degrees was used as backfill material. The reinforcement layers were installed at an incline to improve pullout resistance and anchored in backfilled trenches for tensioning. The innovative design ensured stability while effectively managing water drainage

After

Materials Used

High-strength geotextile reinforcement was incorporated, providing tensile strengths ranging from 50 kN/m to 200 kN/m. Locally available murum soil, with a friction angle of 32 degrees, was used as backfill material.

Segmental Retaining Wall with PE Reinforcement Carpet

A two-tier wall design was implemented, with the bottom tier (10 meters) supporting the upper tier (12 meters). Reinforcement layers were inclined to enhance pullout resistance, with layers anchored in a backfilled trench for added tensioning.

Drainage System

A composite geotextile integrated drainage and tensile reinforcement functions, preventing water logging and ensuring stability

The Impacts

Stability and Resilience

The two-tier wall provided robust support for the widened road, accommodating heavy traffic without structural compromise.

Cost Efficiency

Using the PE Reinforcement Carpet was more economical than alternative solutions like bridges or extensive excavation.

Environmental Sustainability

Locally sourced materials and effective drainage systems minimized environmental impact while ensuring durability

Turning Eroded Slopes into Stable Terrain

Thinking innovatively to protect slopes and prevent erosion, ensuring long-term safety and protection even in challenging environments.

Enhancing Natural Vegetation

Implementing advanced solutions to promote vegetation growth and support ecological balance, transforming empty slopes into healthy landscapes.

"The implementation of the reinforced soil wall with PE Reinforcement Carpet transformed the road infrastructure to the Kanaka Durga Temple. The solution offered unmatched stability, was cost-effective, and ensured long-term durability. We are highly satisfied with the project’s execution and its results."
