The Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) embarked on a crucial infrastructure project in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, requiring abutment protection to secure the slopes of a newly constructed railway line. The total area of work spanned 404 sqm, and the solution involved the installation of Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat Type-1 (GCCM-1), a robust material known for its durability and rapid deployment capabilities.

The Problem

The project site, situated in a cutting section, exhibited significant challenges: The slope was originally at a steep 90-degree angle, making it highly susceptible to erosion caused by train vibrations. Erosion led to sediment blocking the drainage system at the slope’s base, compromising both stability and functionality. The loose soil and steep incline posed a threat to the long-term safety of the railway infrastructure.

The Solution

To address the challenges, RVNL implemented a comprehensive solution that began with reducing the steep 90-degree slope to a more stable 70-degree angle to mitigate erosion risks. The site was then prepared through extensive excavation and soil management to create a suitable surface for applying the Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM-1). Over 404 sqm of 5 mm thick GCCM was installed to provide robust, long-term protection against erosion caused by train vibrations. Additionally, stabilizing the slope reduced the risk of sediment blockage in the drainage system, ensuring both structural integrity and functional efficiency. This efficient and durable solution was completed in just 20 days, demonstrating effective planning and execution
